Police assault on bus driver triggers indefinite stirike

Transport workers yesterday began an indefinite bus strike on Thakurgaon-Ranishankoil, Thakurgaon-Baluiadangi and Thakurgaon-Ruhia roads protesting assault on a bus driver by police on Thakurgaon-Pirganj road earlier on the day. Police said Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shahiduzzaman and Police Superintendent Md Shah Alam were going to Mohammadpur Union in Sadar upazila to see the union parishad election in the morning. When the DC's car reached Motherganj on Thakurgaon-Pirganj road at around 10:45am, it narrowly escaped head-on collision with a passenger bus coming from Pirganj. Law enforcers, who were going to the union along with the DC and SP, stopped the bus and beat up its driver Ramzan Ali. Hearing the news, transport workers blocked Station Road in the town for three hours from 11:30am and stage a demonstration demanding punishment to the policemen who assaulted the bus driver. They then stopped plying of buses on three roads for an indefinite period. Thakurgaon Municipality Mayor SMA Moin, Acting President of district Awami League and Officer in Charge of Sadar Police Station Gopal Chakraborty sat with the leaders of Thakurgaon Transport Workers' Association and Transport Owners' Association and assured the leaders of the two associations of resolving the issue at a meeting with the DC and SP today. Contacted, DC Shaiduzzaman said police beat up the bus driver as he was driving the vehicle recklessly. General Secretary of Thakurgaon Transport Workers' Association Abdul Jabbar said their strike will continue until the policemen responsible for assaulting the bus driver is punished.
