Police intercept bid to bury domestic help secretly

Police intercepted and recovered the body of a teenage domestic help as her employers secretly arranged her burial in Birganj upazila after she succumbed to burn injuries on Wednesday. The deceased, Shanta Akter, 13, daughter of late Saiful Islam of Bhabki village in Birganj upazila, worked at the house of Md Mofazzal Hossain, a retired general manager of Pubali Bank, and a resident of Mission Road in Dinajpur town. After the girl got burn injuries on Sunday midnight, her employer secretly took her to Dhaka for treatment but she died on Wednesday morning, police said. "Mofazzal's family members brought Shanta's body to Shahidul Islam, a relative of Mofazzal, also a resident of Bhabki village in Birganj upazila, for burial on Wednesday afternoon. Informed by the girl's family members, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital for autopsy in the evening," said ASI Abdul Motin of Birganj police station. Mofazzal Hossain's family members claimed that the girl was burnt in the fire originated from a mosquito coil. Police, on the other hand, said attempt to bury the body secretly gives rise to the suspicion that someone set fire to the girl. Meanwhile, neighbours alleged that Shanta was often tortured. Anisur Rahman, officer in -- charge of Birganj police station, said autopsy report will make clear whether it is an accident or deliberate act of burning. A team from Dinajpur Kotwali police station inspected Mofazzal's house on Mission Road in Dinajpur town and a UD case was filed with Birganj police station on Wednesday, police said.
