Chairman-elect's men raid house of defeated rival
The supporters of a chairman-elect vandalised the house of a defeated chairman candidate in Saturia upazila of the district yesterday morning.
According to witnesses, about 70 to 80 people, led by Abdul Haque, younger brother of chairman-elect Abdur Rouf of Dhankora Union Parishad, attacked the house of the defeated candidate Altaf Hossain at Dotora village at around 10:30am.
They damaged a jeep, two motorbikes, furniture, television, refrigerator and other valuable things and beat up the family members, leaving six of them injured.
The injured are Altaf Hossain's wife Momtaz Begum, his son-in-law Ahmed Sharif, daughters Nadira Akter, 30, Lucky Akter, 27, and Akhi Akter, 21, and niece Tasli Akter.
Altaf escaped attack as he took shelter in a room on the first floor of the two-storey house. He alleged that the attackers also looted Tk 1.27 lakh and gold ornaments from his house.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and took the injured to Manikganj Sadar Hospital. Momtaz Begum and Ahmed Sharif sustained head injuries and are undergoing treatment at the hospital while the rest received first aid.
Locals said the supporters of Abdur Rouf also beat up Robi Saha, a supporter of Altaf Hossain, and damaged the house of Mizanur Rahman, another supporter of the defeated chairman candidate, at the village.
Assistant Superintendent of Police of Manikganj Sadar Circle Jasim Uddin visited the spot.
Altaf Hossain filed a case with Saturia Police Station against 70 people including Rouf's brother Abdul Haque. None of the accused was arrested as of filing of this report at 6:00pm yesterday.
