People of Barokhat Union under Hatibandha upazila yesterday blocked Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway in Milon Bazar area for an hour from 12:00 noon and then formed a human chain at the same place demanding re-polling at a centre in the union. They alleged that the ruling Awami League backed candidate Mostafa Zaman Sohel with the connivance of the presiding and polling officers manipulated the election results of Koladabri centre on the night of June 9 and snatched the victory of their candidate Abdul Hye. They demanded unconditional release of Abdul Hye who was sentenced to one year's imprisonment by a mobile court the same night. Law enforcers arrested Abdul Hye after his supporters attacked the presiding and polling officers of the centre on their way to upazila headquarters after announcing election results. He was produced before the mobile court that sent him to jail. The supporters of the defeated chairman candidate demanded re-polling at the centre within a week. Otherwise, they threatened to launch a tougher agitation programme in Hatibandha upazila. “We cast our votes for Abdul Hye but AL supported candidate Mostafa Zaman Sohel snatched the victory of our candidate,” they said.
