One killed, 70 hurt in post-UP poll violence

Post-UP poll violence in Gopalganj, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts yesterday and on Tuesday night left at least one person killed and over 70 injured. Our Goplalganj correspondent reported that a woman was killed and at least 10 others were injured during a clash between the supporters of an elected member and a defeated candidate at Jatrabari village under Moksudpur upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Khodeja Begum, 55, wife of Tota Mia of the village. The supporters of elected member Badsha Dorjee and defeated member candidate Salam Dorjee locked in an altercation over the election results in the yard of the deceased's house at around 11:00am. At one stage, they attacked each other, leaving Khodeja dead on the spot and at least 10 others from both sides injured. Police said injury or stampede might be the reason for Khodeja's death. On information, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the clashing groups. They picked up eight people from the spot. No case was lodged with the police station concerned as of 5:00pm yesterday. In Lalmonirhat, at least 50 people were injured in post-poll clashes between the supporters of the elected chairmen and their rival candidates and the elected members and their rival candidates in Aditmari upazila on Tuesday night, reports our correspondent. The injured were admitted to Aditmari Upazila Health Complex, Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital and Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. Police said 25 people were injured in Durgapur Union, 15 people in Komlabari Union, six in Mohishkhocha Union and the rest in Saptibari Union under the upazila. In Gaibandha, twelve people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two defeated member candidates in Boali Union in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night, reports UNB.. Of the injured, three were admitted to a local hospital while the rest given first aid. Police said the supporters of member candidates attacked each other following the announcement of poll results at the centre at around 10:30pm. At one stage, the feuding groups encircled the election officials and tried to snatch ballot boxes. Being informed, additional police rushed to the spot and rescued the officials.
