Monday's Attack on Trainee Nurses
MMCH nurses observe strike
Vow to go for indefinite strike from Saturday if culprits not taken to task
Nurses at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) yesterday observed a four-hour strike demanding punishment to culprits who attacked trainee nurses at the hospital on Monday.
At least 35 people were injured as trainee nurses and employees of MMCH locked in a series of clashes on Monday. Among the injured, 30 are students of Mymensingh Nursing College (MNC) and the rest five employees.
Nurses agitating under the banner of Bangladesh Diploma Nurses Association (BDNA) said that the strike hours will increase everyday if the attackers are not brought to book.
The protesters who wore black badge yesterday also said they will go for an indefinite strike from June 18 if their demands were not met by tomorrow.
"We have already formed emergency squads to look after the critical patients during the strike hours,” said Nazma Khatun, secretary of BDNA local unit.
Boycotting the classes for the second day, the trainee nurses also formed a human chain in front of Mymensingh Press Club in the morning.
MNC students Moyna Akhtar, Enamul Haque, Abul Hasnat, Mira Akhtar, Al Amin, Champa Das, Farhad Hossain, Sheikh Zohrul Alam, Zahedul Islam and Mobarak Hossain spoke at a rally during the human chain programme from 10 to 11am.
The speakers demanded immediate removal of MMCH director Brigadier General Dr Md. Shahjahan and official action against the fourth class employees who led the attack on the students.
The class boycott programme will continue till our demands are met, vowed the students.
Sources said, the trainee nurses on Monday morning went to meet the hospital director to know the reasons for cancellation of their sick room facilities.
When the students entered the director's room, a group of fourth class employees of the hospital rushed to the spot and asked the students to give them easy passage.
As the students refused to leave the place, an altercation began and at one stage an employee pushed a female student and pulled her scarf triggering a clash, students said.
The employees later swooped on the students and beat them up with sticks indiscriminately, injuring at least 30 students.
Meanwhile the employees of MMCH under the banner of Karmachari Oikya Parishad also brought out a procession at the hospital yesterday chanting slogans against the nurses.
