Post-UP poll violence leaves 30 injured in 3 districts
Post-UP poll violence in Thakurgaon, Natore and Chapainawabganj districts left at least 30 people injured yesterday and on Wednesday night.
Our Thakurgaon correspondent reported that at least 10 people, including a presiding officer and two Ansars, were injured as the supporters of a defeated member candidate attacked election officials and on-duty Ansars after announcement of results at Vedail Primary School polling centre in Rator union under Ranishankoil upazila on Wednesday night.
After announcement of results by Presiding Officer Moniruzzaman at around 9:00pm, the supporters of defeated member candidate Nasirul Islam,45, rejected the results and demanded recounting of votes.
As the presiding officer refused to accept the demand, the supporters of Nasirul swooped on him, polling officers and Ansars, leaving 10 people, including the presiding officer, two Ansars, injured.
On information, striking force went to the spot and arrested defeated member candidate Nasirul, Kamal Hossain and Khairul Islam.
Later, Judicial Magistrate Fahim Faisal sentenced Nasirul Islam, 45, son of late Akhter Uddin of Vedail village, to one year's imprisonment, and Kamal Hossain, 25, son of late Yunus Ali of the same village, to three years imprisonment for violating election code of conduct. They were sent to Thakurgaon jail.
Another arrestee, Khairul Islam, 25, son of Abu Bakkar of the village, was sued for assaulting the presiding officer. A regular case was filed against him. He was sent to jail hajat.
In Natore, the supporters of two defeated chairman candidate-- Akram and Noyez Uddin--clashed in Paka Union under Bagatipara upazila at around 2:00pm yesterday, leaving at least 12 people from both sides injured.
Police went to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control.
Of the injured, Mozam Ali, Joy Mia, Ramjan Ali, Hannan, Saiful Isalm, Aloka, Mukti, Fazlul Haque and Nizam Uddin were admitted to Lalpur Upazila Health Complex. Fazlul Haque was later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
In C'nawabganj, four people were injured and three shops ransacked during post poll clashes in Gomostapur upazila on Wednesday night, reports UNB.
Police said supporters of chairman--elect Shahidul Islam of Bangabari Union Parishad and defeated chairman candidate Sadirul Islam clashed, leaving three people injured from both sides.
Being informed, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) along with BGB members went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
In another incident, a supporter of a defeated chairman candidate was injured by his rivals at Boalia Union.
