Local people foiled a land grabber's attempt to occupy a portion of Gaibandha municipality graveyard on Wednesday. A gang of around 20 people erected a bamboo fence, hoisted red flags there and hung a banner on around one acre area of land of Gaibandha municipality graveyard Tuesday night, said the caretaker of the graveyard. They also made arrangement to cut down trees of the surrounding areas in the morning, he said. As aggrieved people chased the land grabber's men and beat up a few of them, the latter fled away. Shamim Mia, an 'agent' of the land grabber, claimed that Masudur Rahman Chowdhury of village Kazla in Gobindaganj upazila got an injunction in his favour from a lower court on a 1.24-decimal plot of the municipality graveyard. "Accordingly, we came to take possession of the plot," he said. He, however, failed to give detailed and specific information in support of the claim. Refuting the claim, Motiur Rahman, panel mayor of Gaibandha municipality, said, "We never received any notice from the court in this regard. Municipality graveyard is a public property and so, no one can claim it as personal property." The mayor is now outside Gaibandha and necessary measures will be taken against the grabber soon after the mayor returns to the town, the panel mayor added. The heinous attempt to grab land of the graveyard has sparked protest from the town dwellers. Demanding punishment of the grabbers, they have vowed to resist any such practice in future.
