Pirate gang leader shot dead
Ring leader of a pirate gang was gunned down while his wife and a gang man were shot by the second in-command in Hatiya upazila early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Malek alias Munshia Chora, leader of 'Munshia Chora Bahini'.
Malek's fifth wife Sajeda Begum and gang member Abdul Monnan Munna, 38, who sustained bullet wounds during the incident that took place at about 3:30am, were admitted to the local upazila health complex.
Locals said Nizam Dakat, second-in-command of Munshia Chora Bahini, killed Malek at his Charkalam den at Nijhum Dwip over sharing of booty and conflict in command over the gang.
Malek was accused in around 28 cases for murder, looting, extortion and other crimes.
Acting officer-in-charge of Hatiya police station Subhash Pal said they recovered Malek's body from Nijhum Dwip in the afternoon and sent it to Noakhali Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
