9 chairman, 15 member candidates fined

Mobile courts fined nine chairman and 15 member candidates and sentenced three others to jail in Kishoreganj and Joypurhat districts yesterday and on Sunday night for violating election code of conduct. Our Kishoreganj correspondent reported that a mobile court led by Nikli Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Fazlur Rahman, on Sunday night fined eight UP chairman aspirants Tk 2,000 each and 15 member candidates Tk 1,000 each for pasting posters on walls. All the eight chairmen candidates are in the election race in Nikli Sadar Union. They are Md Sajedul Islam, Md Asmat Ali, Amirul Ali Mamun, Dr Kafil Uddin, Md Akter Hossain, Borhan Uddin, Md Iftekher Ahmed Arif and Sultana Kamal. In Joypurhat, a candidate contesting for the post of chairman of Puranpoil Union Parishad under Sadar upazila was fined and three of his supporters were sentenced to jail for violation election rules, reports our Dinajpur correspondent. Acting on a tip-off, a mobile court led Executive Magistrate Ramendra Nath Biswas went to Bankhur village under the union yesterday morning and arrested three supporters of chairman candidate Nikhil Chandra Mondol while they were distributing money among the voters. The court sentenced the three--Nahid Hossain, Shafiqul Islam and Al Helal--to 15 days imprisonment The mobile court also fined Nikhil Chandra Mondol Tk10,000 as he engaged the three in such illegal act, police said. Our Gazipur correspondent Add: A mobile court yesterday arrested five supporters of two chairman candidates in the upcoming election to Maouna Union Parishad election on charge of violation code of conduct.
