Hectic campaign as Lohagara poll nears

Election campaign is gaining momentum in Lohagara with mayor and councilor candidates going door to door to woo voters for the June 12 municipal election. Besides, the candidates and their workers are distributing leaflets, miking and holding rallies giving the whole area a festive look. A tough contest is expected to decide the fate of the mayoral candidates at Lohagara, local sources said. The district election officer of Narail earlier declared the municipality election schedule. The date for submission of the nomination papers was May 16 while scrutinizing was held on May 19. District election office sources said, besides six mayor aspirants, 45 will vie for councillor posts and 13 for the reserved seats in Lohagara municipality. Of the 6 mayor candidates Munsi Alauddin, vice-president, Lohagara upazila AL was nominated by district Awami Legue while the rebel Awami League candidate is Asraful Alam, president of Lohagara upazila Jubo League. Md Nayoz Ahmed Thakur, vice president of district BNP was nominated by district BNP. He is the incumbent mayor of Lohagara municipality. The other three figures are Md Abul Hasan Mollah, general secretary of Lohagara upazila Islami Sanshontanro Andolon and independent candidates Abdul Motaleb Munshi and Syeed Moshiur Rahman. The total number of voters is 16,943. Of them, 8,098 are male voters and the rest 8,845 are female voters in the municipality. Sheikh Bulbul Islam, 35, a voter of Lohagara municipal area said, "We want development of the municipality, not relief. I will cast my vote in favour of a competent and honest mayoral candidate". Md Sharifuzzaman, 28, another voter of the area, said he and his family members will cast vote only for those who are honest, sincere and hard working. AL nominated mayor candidate Munshi Alauddin got "Pineapple" symbol while rebel candidate Md Asraful Alam got “wall clock”. BNP nominated mayor candidate Nayoz Ahmed Thakur will be contesting with "spectacles” symbol, according to district election office.
