Commits 'suicide' after losing poll

A former member of Golapganj union parishad (UP) under Nawabganj upazila allegedly committed suicide yesterday morning after losing the June 2 election. The deceased was identified as Jonab Ali, 50, son Md Abdur Rahman of Fatehpur village. Police said the UP election in Nawabganj upazila was held on June 2. In the election, Jonab Ali was contesting for the member post of Golapganj union parishad. But the incumbent UP member was defeated by just 54 votes. Witnesses said Jonab came out of his residence yesterday morning to go to Birampur upazila. But when he reached Polashbari area he suddenly jumped before the Rajshahi-bound Borendra Express train which crushed him under its wheels instantly. Nawabganj police quoting family members said, Jonab was feeling extremely frustrated after losing the post in the election which might be the reason for committing suicide. In Comilla, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a union parishad chairman candidate along with contraband phensidyl from the border area Friday night, reports UNB. The arrestee was identified as Zakir Hossain Manik, chairman candidate of Jagannathpur union parishad in Adarsha Sadar upazila, son of late Sirajul Haque of Kalikapur village. Sources said, on secret information BGB members caught Manik along with 10 bottles of phensidyl from the border area at about 8:00pm.
