Criminals loot ballot boxes in Narsingdi, Lalmonirhat

Barring incidents of ballot box snatching in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi and Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat, polling in 12 districts on the fourth day of the second phase of union parishad election was largely peaceful yesterday. In Lalmonirhat, criminals took away ballot boxes of Bowra polling centre in Bowra Union, Shibganj polling centre in Srirampur Union and Digolbari polling centre in Kuchlibari Union yesterday night, reports our correspondent. The incidents took place between 7:30 and 8:00pm while the ballot boxes were being taken to Patgram UNO office by the presiding and polling officers with police escort after announcement of results. In Digolbari area of Kuchlibar Union, police and criminals exchanged fire, leaving 23 people, including two constables, injured. The injured are undergoing treatment at Patgram Upazila Health Complex. Election to eight union parishads in the upazila was held peacefully. No untoward incident was reported from any polling centre during voting. In Narsingdi, a ballot box was snatched from Joynagar Government Primary School centre in Joynagar Union of Shibpur upazila at around 3:50pm, just 10 minutes before the closing time, according to our correspondent. Uttam Kumar Roy, presiding officer of the polling centre, said all of a sudden a gang of criminals entered the female booth and took away a ballot box. Three law enforcers were injured during a clash with the criminals. They are Sub-Inspector Mozammel Haque, constables Delwar Hossain and Mohammad Lal Mian. Police later picked up former chairman of the union Mujibur Sarker and two youths--Khaled Mahmud and Monir Hossain--for their alleged involvement in the incident. No untoward incident took place at all other centres in seven unions of Shipur upazila during voting. Election to other union parishads including eight in Madaripur, ten in Sirajganj, eight in Netrakona, ten unions in Moulvibazar, five in Munshiganj and ten in Natore were held largely peaceful. Report our correspondent. In Netrakona, elections to eight union parishads in Madan upazila were held peacefully. Over 86 thousands voters cast their votes. In Moulvibazar, voting took place in ten unions under Baralekha upazila of the district. Police said a supporter of chairman candidate Jubayer Ahmed Liton was injured in an attack by the opposition candidate Akbar Ali's supporters in front of Karampur Community primary school polling station under Shahbazpur union at noon. In Munshiganj, elections to five union parishads under Sreenagar upazila and four union parishads in Sirajdikhan upazila were held peacefully. In Jamalpur, voting took place in 15 unions under Sadar upazila of the district peacefully except some stray incidents. As many as 307212 voters cast their votes.
