One killed, 17 hurt in Narail pre-poll clash

One person was killed and 17 others were injured in a pre-poll clash between the supporters of two union parishad chairman candidates in Narail Sadar upazila yesterday. The deceased was identified as Milon Sheikh, 40, of Tarapur village under Shingasholpur Union of the upazila. At least 50 houses were ransacked and three motorbikes torched during the clash that continued for one and a half hours from 8:00am. Police quoted locals as saying that the supporters of Saiful Islam Hitu, a ruling party supported chairman candidate in Shingasholpur Union Parishad election, swooped on Shipon Molla while he was seeking votes for his brother Khairuzzaman Molla, a BNP backed chairman candidate, at Tarapur village at around 7:30am. Hearing the news, Khairuzzaman's men equipped with lethal weapons made a counter attack on their rivals, leading to a fierce clash between the supporters of the two chairman aspirants. Milon Sheikh, a supporter of Hitu, was killed on the spot and 17 others from both sides were injured during the clash. Being informed, police rushed to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control. Of the injured, Moti, Jakir, Shipon, Mizanur, Khalil and Goni were shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. Our Gaibandha correspondent adds: Pre-poll clash between the supporters of two UP chairmen candidates at Belka Union in Sunderganj upazila yesterday left five people injured. Locals said chairman candidate Abdul Jabber Sarker Dulal was surrounded by his rival candidate Jaharul Haq Sarder's men while campaigning in ward No 9 of the union on Friday night. Hearing the news, Dulal's supporters rushed to the spot and rescued him. As a sequel to the incident, the supporters of the two candidates locked in a clash at Majidpara yesterday morning, leaving five people, including Dulal, injured. Meanwhile, seven unions in the upazila (Sunderganj) will go to polls today. The unions are Tarapur, Belka, Dahabandh, Kanchipara, Chandipur, Kapasia and Sreepur. As many as 45 chairmen aspirants, 320 member candidates, 113 women candidates for reserved seats are contesting elections to the seven union parishads.
