Lightning kills 10 in 4 districts

Lightning killed at least 10 people in four districts yesterday and the day before. Three people were killed and four others injured by lightning at two villages of Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat yesterday noon, reports our correspondent. The dead were identified as Nurnahar Begum, 25, wife of Hasan Ali and Sahera Banu, 45, wife of Taher Uddin of Chawratari village and Hasina Begum, 32, wife of Sohir Ali of Kumortari village. The injured are former woman member of Durgapur union parishad Anjuman Begum, 40, wife of Israil Hossain, Morzina Begum, 30, wife of Shamsul Islam of Gondhomoruya village and Golzan Begum, 35, wife of Romzan Ali and Mamotaz Begum, 22, wife of Yasin Miah of Chawratari village. They were admitted to Aditmari upazila health complex and Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital, family members and locals said. Quoting family members, Aditmari police said, the victims were struck by lightning when they went out of home for work amid rain. In Thakurgaon, two people were killed and two others injured by lightning yesterday morning. In Baliadangi upazila, a woman was killed and her husband and 3-year-old son were injured by lightning as they went out of home in the morning during heavy rain, reports our correspondent. The victim was identified as Banesa Khatun, 32, wife of Nazrul Islam of Nengtihara village. Police and locals said lightning struck them at about 6:00am. In Ranishankoil, Gonesh Chandra, 27, son of Bipoti Chandra of Dharmagarh village under Ranishankoil upazila was struck by lightning at about 7:00am while he was ploughing his crop field during rain. He died on the spot. In Chapainawabganj, lightning killed three people and injured another in separate places yesterday afternoon, reports UNB. All of them were struck by lightning during storms in those areas. The deceased are Toga,35, of Sadar upazila, Atabur,35, of Jagannathpur village of Shibganj uapzila, and Ismail,10, of Mominpara village of Nachole upazila. Besides, a woman, Rizia Khatun was injured by thunderbolt in Nachole uapzila. In Brahmanbaria, a farmer and his son were killed and three others injured in separate incidents of lightning in Nasirnagar upazila Friday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Shamsher Ali, 60, and his son Shahjahan Miah, 25, of Sonatola village, reports UNB. Local people said Shamsher and his son were harvesting paddy at a field in the village in the afternoon. Suddenly, a thunderbolt struck them, leaving them dead on the spot. In another incident Maleka Begum, 40, her son Yasin, 15, and Monoj Poddar, 40, of Laxmipur village in the upazila were injured in lightning strike. They were admitted to the upazila health complex.
