Interns at Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) went on an indefinite strike yesterday morning protesting alleged attack on their colleagues by the relatives of a patient on Friday. Sources said, Divya Joyati Saha, 13, of Baro Bazar area in the district town was admitted to the hospital's ward 14 on June 1 with bronco pneumonia. But the relatives of the patient took him to a paying bed at ward 19 defying the instruction of the on duty doctors. The patient's condition was not well, said Dr Rony Roy, an intern. At around 5:30 pm, Divya Joyati Saha died of his complications at ward 19. When two interns went to the ward, the relatives of the patient with the help of outsiders allegedly swooped on them and confined them to a room for around three hours. Being informed, other interns went to the spot and tried to free their colleagues but the outsiders and patient's relatives assaulted a few interns physically, injuring two at around 9:00 pm, intern sources said. Injured interns --- Jahangir Alam Sujon and Arif Ahsan Shuvo--- are now undergoing treatment at students' cabin of MMCH. The interns yesterday afternoon submitted a memorandum to MMCH authorities asking to meet their five-point demand. The demands included tightening of internal security and immediate arrest of attackers. Dr Anwaruzzaman, assistant director of MMCH said a six-member probe body headed by Dr Shafiuddin Ahmed will probe the incident. He said Goutam Saha, father of the patient yesterday lodged a complaint with the MMCH authorities accusing a few doctors of not taking proper care of his son. Secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Mymensingh unit Dr Motiur Rahman Bhuiyan said, to ensure better service, the interns need strict security. As they handle most cases they often fall victim to this type of situation whenever a patient dies at the hospital.
