Gas official murdered, maid goes into hiding

The decomposed body of a female official of the state-run Jalalabad Gas Company was recovered from her house in Sylhet city yesterday evening. The deceased was identified as Anwara Begum Chowdhury, 56, manager (purchase) of Jalalabad Gas Transmission & Distribution Company Limited, a concern of the state-run Petrobangla. Family and company officials said Anwara last attended office on December 2 and was due to join a training course in the capital from December 5. Finding no trace of her in the last two days, family members, including her brothers, went to the house in the city's Lamabazar area yesterday afternoon. As the house was found locked and bad smell coming from inside, family members informed the police who reached the spot at around 5:00pm. Police entered the house, unlocking the door and recovered the body. They later sent it to Osmani Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. Family sources said Anwara along with a housemaid used to live on the second floor of a four-storey building in Lamabazar area. Her husband Shamsul Abedin, sons Touhidul Abedin Chowdhury and Dr Toufiqul Abedin Chowdhury, and daughter Fahmida Abedin live in the United Kingdom. The maid has gone into hiding. Contacted, the officer-in-charge of Sylhet Kotwali Police Station said they are trying to unearth the clue to the death and looking for the maid.
