Factory, jute godown, 35 shops gutted

A food factory, a jute godown and at least 35 shops were gutted in separate incidents of fire yesterday and the before. In Narayanganj, at least five people were injured in a big fire at Hashem Food Products in Karnokop area under Tararo municipality in Rupganj upazila yesterday afternoon. Shah Awlad Hossain, in-charge of Bhulta police camp said, at around 3:00pm yesterday the fire originated from an electric short circuit on the second floor of the building and soon engulfed three floors of the six-storied factory, reports a correspondent. Belal Ahmed, deputy general manager of the factory estimated the loss of properties at Tk 2 crore. In Jhenidah, fire gutted a jute godown at Hatgopalpur bazar under Sadar upazila, reports our correspondent. The fire originated from a short circuit, fire brigade and police said. According to locals, at around 11.30pm on Tuesday the jute godown owned by Enamul Khan Litu and Subash Kundo caught fire which continued for three hours. There were 950 mounds jute in the two godowns, said Litu and Subash. A Faridpur report adds: At least 25 shops were gutted in a fire at Nagarkanda Bazar under Nagarkada upazila of the district early yesterday. According Fire Brigade sources, the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop and soon engulfed other shops at around 3am. On information, fire fighters from district town and Boalmari rushed in and brought the fire under control after three hours of hectic efforts. Different shops included rice, hardware, grocery, tin, plastic material, medicine were seriously damaged, locals and shop owners said. Affected shop owners estimated the losses caused by fire at Tk 3 crore. In Khulna, at least 10 shops were gutted in a fire, which broke out at Chitrali Super Market in Khalishpur industrial area of the city on Tuesday night, reports UNB. Witnesses said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop at about 9pm and soon engulfed the adjacent nine shops. The affected shop owners claimed that the extent of loss from the fire could go up to Tk 10 lakh.
