BDR-BSF accord to maintain peace

Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at a sector commander level meeting at Nohali village, 10 kilometres inside Fakirganj border in Pirganj upazila under Thakurgaon district yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to maintain peace on the border and resist trans-border crimes. Dinajpur Sector Commander Col Saleh Ahmed led the eight-member BDR delegation while a nine-member BSF team was led by Royganj DIG Yiaswanta Sing at the meeting at Nohali River View High School in Pirganj upazila. Col Saleh Ahmed, Commanding Officer of 2 Rifles Battalion, Lt Col Mhafuz Alam and other BDR battalion officials received the BSF officials with bunches of flowers when they entered Bangladesh through Danazpur border in Pirganj upazila at 11:30am. During the meeting that continued till 5:00pm both sides agreed on joint patrol to check border crimes, smuggling, drug trade, intrusion and trafficking of women and children, Col Saleh Ahmed told a press briefing after the meeting. The two sides also signed a MoU to maintain peace on the border, show highest restraint at special situations and solve border related problems through discussion. They agreed not to fire on innocent people at any position. They also agreed to take up programmes to develop awareness among the people to obey border rules. In Chuadanga, Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) on Monday night handed over two Bangladesh Rifles jawans they had detained inside their territory, reports our Kushtia Correspondent. The two BDR men were Subedar Salek and Azad of Goeshpur camp of 35-Rifles Battalion in Chuadanga. According to BDR sources, the two BDR members raided Kulapara point under Jibonnagar upazila in Chuadanga at about 9:30pm on Monday responding to a tip off that a group of smugglers were entering Bangladesh territory from India with smuggled items. At one stage, the smugglers entered into Indian territory and the BDR men continued the chase. A BSF team from Meteri camp in Murshidabad district of West Bengal detained the BDR men, the sources added. However, the BSF handed over the BDR men after an emergency meeting at about midnight.
