A potato trader here yesterday alleged that 2,520 sacks of potatoes he kept at Biswas Cold Storage at Boroharishpur in the town got rotten due to negligence of the authorities concerned. Addressing a press conference at the local press club, the trader, Khurshid Alam, claimed that he suffered a loss of Tk 31.50 lakh and demanded compensation from the cold storage authorities. Kurshid said he has submitted a written complaint to the district administration and local chamber of commerce and industry against the authorities of the cold storage. He urged the district administration and chamber of commerce and industry to help him realise compensation from the authorities of the cold storage. Contacted, Sreekant, manager of Biswas Cold Storage, said as the quality of the potatoes was not good, they first refused to keep them at the cold storage. "On repeated requests by Khurshid Alam, we then put the potatoes at our cold storage." He said when the potatoes had started rotting, the authorities informed Khurshid Alam over cellphone but he did not take the matter seriously. Instead of taking back the potatoes, Alam sent a letter to the authorities, requesting them to keep the potatoes at the cold storage until December 31, the manager further said.
