RU students boycott dining halls

The resident students of Rajshahi University (RU) started boycotting dining halls from yesterday protesting hike in meal charge. Sources said the authorities of the 16 dormitories in a meeting on December 1 decided to increase the meal charge from Tk 16 to 20 at noon and from Tk 13 to 16 at night with effect from December 7. Hearing the news, several hundred resident students of different halls staged demonstration and held a rally on the campus at around 10:00pm on Monday demanding cancellation of additional meal charge. At the rally, the students decided not to take meal at the dining halls until the decision of the Provost Council is withdrawn. They alleged that the authorities of all dormitories suddenly increased the meal charge, showing price hike in essentials including rice and edible oil. Meanwhile, the dining hall of Sher-e-Bangla Hall has remained closed since Sunday noon as the resident students protested the incident of serving rat meat to a fellow. Abdul Matin, a fourth year student of physics department and also a resident of the hall, found two pieces of rat meat in a chicken curry while having lunch at the dining hall.
