A Correspondent, Barisal
Police and BCL cadres yesterday foiled a rally of BNP injuring 11 activists of the party at Gournadi upazila town in the district. S M Maniruzzaman Monir, upazila BNP president and Badiuzzaman Mintu, Barisal north district Jubo Dal secretary, said upazila and municipal BNP and front organisations arranged an anti-government rally in front of their office at 2:00pm yesterday. "When we brought out a procession after the rally, police led by Sub Inspector Babul and aided by BCL cadres attacked us with lethal weapons and dispersed the BNP activists, he said. At least 11 people were injured and treated at local clinic and pharmacies. The BCL cadres also locked the upazila BNP office, BNP leaders claimed. Nurul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gournadi police station, said police did not interfere in BNP rally inside their office. As they ignored our request and tried to block Barisal-Dhaka highway and attacked the law enforcers, police went into action, he said. The OC expressed his ignorance about locking of BNP office by BCL cadres while the BCL leaders were not available for their comment.
