Robbery at jewellery shop in guise of Rab, DB police

A daring robbery was committed at a jewelry house and other shops at Baburhat Bazaar beside Chandpur-Comilla highway in the district town on Saturday. Witnesses said, a gang of 20/25 robbers, wearing uniforms of Rab and DB police, raided the market and looted 88 tolas of gold ornaments and Tk 3 lakh in cash from Maa Jewellers. Night guard of the bazaar Md Ali and two other witnesses, who were tortured by the gang said the robbers, divided into several groups took position at different points of the market before committing robbery. They broke open shutters several of several other shops and looted cash and valuables. According to a report from Gazipur, robbers looted valuables worth about Tk 6 lakh from three houses, including that of film artiste Humayun Faridi, at Daripara, Brahmanpara and Khanjana villages in Kaliganj upazila early Saturday. Six members of a house were injured while trying to resist the robbers. Locals said a gang of 10-12 armed robbers broke open the door of Humayun Faridi`s house at Chuarikhola of Brahmanpara and looted cash and gold ornaments worth Tk 2.5 lakh taking house members hostage at gunpoint and decamped with the booties late at night. The same gang swooped on Shafiqul Islam Masud`s house at Khanjana village at about 4am and mercilessly beat up the members of the house, injuring six as they tried to resist them. The robbers looted cash and gold ornaments worth Tk 1.3 lakh from the house. Earlier, the gang stormed into the house of NGO official Alavi Rozario at Daripara village and looted valuables worth Tk 2.2 lakh at 1:30am.
