Hard rock mining resumed as 50 out of 292 agitating miners of Madhyapra Granite Mining Company Ltd (MGMCL) joined their work yesterday morning. At least 150 tonnes of hard rock were extracted until 2:00pm yesterday, said Md Abul Basher, general manager (admin) of MGMCL. Company officials said 292 miners and workers were appointed by Blue Star Service on condition of 'no work no pay'. Considering the agreement with the hiring authorities, 50 miners joined their work, the officials added. Mesbahul Shah, one of the 50 miners, said, "We have joined our work, considering the financial loss we suffered in the last five days." Meanwhile, the authorities concerned yesterday issued a letter, asking the agitating miners to join their duties immediately. Otherwise, the letter said, stern action will be taken for non-compliance with the order. Md Mominul Haque Momin, President of Madhyapra Granite Mining Company Ltd Miners and Workers Union, yesterday said no one of the striking miners has joined his work. "We will continue strike until our demands are met," he said. Sources said the union yesterday could not announce its next course of action as the miners have been divided into two groups. The miners and workers of Madhyapra Granite Mining Company Ltd (MGMCL) began an indefinite strike on November 27 protesting termination of their five fellows including the president and the general secretary of Miners and Workers' Union of the company and withdrawal of the case filed against them by the authorities. Addressing a press conference at Dinajpur Press Club the following day, the miners alleged that the MGMCL authorities terminated five miners on November 25 without serving any show cause notice on them. Miners have been demanding regularisation of their job with MGMCL for long. Against this backdrop, they protested appointments of nine officials and held demonstration when the officials went to the site for joining on November 23. After the incident, the MGMCL authorities terminated five union leaders and filed a case against them with Parbatipur Police Station.
