2 land in jail for acid attack on women

Two people were sentenced to jail on Monday each for 10 years for throwing acid on women in Chandpur and Jhalakati. A court in Chandpur on Monday convicted a man and awarded him 10 years imprisonment for throwing acid on a housewife at Keshorekot village in Kochua upazila in 2002, reports UNB. The court also fined Alam, son of late Nasiruddin of the village, Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer one year more RI. According to the prosecution, when Momtazuddin and his wife Monowara Begum of the village were cultivating a plot of land on May 29, 2002, Alam claimed the ownership of the land and asked them to leave the place. On their refusal Alam along with his men attacked and assaulted the couple. Later, at one stage, he threw acid on Monowara leaving her critically injured. Later, Momtazuddin filed a case accusing Alam and seven others. After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge M Motahar Hossain handed down the verdict acquitting seven others. In Jhalakati, a court sentenced a man in absentia to 10 years imprisonment on Monday for throwing acid on his wife in 2007. The court also fined the convict Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer three months more RI. The convict was identified as Shahidul Islam alias Manik Faraji of Dharakhana village in Sadar upazila. According to the prosecution, Manik got married with Razia Begum, daughter of Sheikh Siraj of Raripara village in Kachua upazila of Bagerhat district in 1988. After a few days of their marriage, Razia came to know that her husband earlier married another woman in Dhaka. On the night of May 10, 2007, following a quarrel over the issue, Manik threw acid at her leaving her critically injured and went into hiding. Later, the victim filed a case against 10 people including Manik with Sadar police station. After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Siddiqul Arefin Chowdhury handed down the verdict acquitting nine others.
