Hotelier's son murdered, trader stabbed for toll
Son of a hotelier was hacked to death in Sylhet yesterday while a trader was critically injured by extortionists in Khagrachhari the day before.
In Sylhet, police recovered the body of Atiqur Rahman Atique, 28, son of Khorshed Alam, owner of the city's Anurag hotel from a toilet of the hotel in Jail road area yesterday evening.
Police and family sources told our staff correspondent that Atique could not be reached over cell phone since 3pm yesterday. During hectic search the family members and the hotel staff broke open the door of the toilet of a room in the hotel and found his body there.
At around noon yesterday Atique came out of their nearby house at Kumarpara and attended some friends including Shafique Ahmed from the capital. Shafique had been staying at a room in the same hotel since 23 November. But none was found in the hotel at the time of recovery of the body, said a police official.
Rab picked up general manager of the hotel Jewel Ahmed and managers Salah Uddin and Shahabuddin Ahmed and three other staff for quizzing in the evening. The body was sent to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College morgue for post mortem.
Atique used to stay in the UK and had been in the country for the last two years after his marriage, family sources said.
Away in Khagrachhari, armed extortionists injured a trader on Sunday as he refused to pay illegal toll demanded by them a few days ago.
The trader was identified as Ajit Kar, 45, son of late Sharat Chandra Kar in College Road area under Sadar upazila, reports a correspondent.
Police said, two armed criminals led by Arjun entered the residence of Ajit Kar at about 11pm Sunday for Tk one lakh toll. Arjun and his aide stabbed in the throat, hands and chest of Ajit as he refused to pay the amount.
Critically injured Ajit Kar was rushed to Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital, which referred him to Chittagong Medical Collage and Hospital.
Police later arrested Arjun, the prime accused from Naniarchhar area in Rangamati district at 3.45pm yesterday.
