Garment worker Jesmin's killers still at large

Jesmin Begum
Law enforcers are yet to nab any of the criminals involved with the rape and killing of the daughter of Khorshed Miah, a freedom fighter of village Balichhara under Doarabazar in Sunamganj district even in two weeks after the brutal incident. Sunamganj unit of 'Amra Muktijoddhar Santan' staged a human chain and a rally on 23 November in front of the Shaheed Minar in the town demanding arrest of the killers. The Doarabazar upazila unit of Muktojoddha Sangsad would also organise a human chain followed by a rally on December 5. Victim Jesmin Begum used to work at a garment factory in the capital. She came to the Sylhet central bus terminal on 12 November on way to her village for celebrating Eid. As she found her cousin Saiful and his brother-in-law Shahid there, Jesmin joined them to travel to the village. But instead, the two took her to a house in the city in a bid to solemnise her marriage with a man. As she refused to accept their proposal, the two kept her confined there for two nights and raped her. She managed to escape on 15 November and started for home, but again the two, along with others swooped on her near the village and took her to a nearby haor (water body). She was violated there again and stabbed to death. The criminals then dumped the body under sand and mud. Acting on secret information, police recovered the mutilated body after three days and sent it to the Sunamganj Sadar hospital for post mortem. The father of the victim later filed a case accusing nine including Jesmin's cousin Saiful. Contacted, the officer-in-charge of Doarabazar PS Saidur Rahman told this correspondent that police are trying `their best' to arrest the killers. The culprits would be caught in day or two, he added.
