Rally demands punishment to culprits in 72 hours

People from all walks of life yesterday held a rally followed by a human chain in Habiganj to protest the rape and killing of schoolgirl Sumi of village Baniagaon in Bahubal upazila. Held near Mirpur Faizunnesa High School, they demanded arrest and punishment to the criminals for the gruesome murder within 72 hours. Otherwise, greater agitation including besiege of police station and other places would be held, they warned. Labour leader Askar Ali chaired the rally while Mirpur Alif Sobhan Degree College principal Abdur Rab Shahin, upazila parishad Vice-Chairman Muktijoddha Firoze Miah, upazila AL general secretary Shohrab Chowdhury, teacher Arju Miah, Syed Khalilur Rahman, Shamsul Haque, Delwar Hossain Chowdhury, central Khelafat Majlish faction's secretary general Moulana Nezam Uddin, UP chairman Ramiz Ali and others spoke. Later a human chain was formed on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway which was joined by several hundred people including students, teachers from colleges, high schools, primary schools and others. Meanwhile, four young men caught in connection with the rape and killing of the girl were sent to the jail hajat through judicial magistrate court yesterday. Police of Bahubal PS on Monday afternoon arrested Bahubal College student and a BCL activist Ruhel Ahmed, Saddam, Jashim Uddin and Sohel. Sumi Akhtar, 15, daughter of Iman Ali of village Baniagaon and student of class eight in Mirpur Faizunnesa High School was picked up by criminals at about 7:00 pm Sunday as she was returning to aunt's house from a neighbour's house. Later, the body of Sumi was found at a graveyard, only 100 yards off their house to hours after the abduction. The villagers took her to the upazila hospital, where the physicians declared her dead.
