Another gets life for killing boy
A man was sentenced to death in Barisal yesterday for double murder while another person got life in Nilphamari the day before for killing a boy.
A Barisal court yesterday sentenced a man to death for murdering his mother and pregnant wife of his brother.
Convict Shamim Ahmed of Daptarkhana area of the city was absconding at the time of handing down the verdict, reports our correspondent.
District and Session Judge Abdus Salam Shikdar pronounced the verdict after examining 18 out of 23 witnesses and other evidences.
The prosecution story in brief is that Shamim killed his mother Sufiya Begum and seven-month pregnant wife of his elder brother Shimu Akter on April 20, 2009 night following a family feud at their house at Daptarkhana road of the city.
He first killed his mother. As Shimu saw the killing, she was also attacked and killed by Shamim.
Father of Shimu, Azizur Rahman Mallik, filed a case in this connection on April 21, 2009 with Kotwali model police station. Police arrested Shamim on April 24, 2009.
Following Shamim's confession the investigation officer of the case filed charge sheet against him on June 6, 2009.
Shamim later got bail from higher court on July 27, 2010 and went into hiding.
In Nilphamari, the District and Session Judge on Tuesday sentenced one person to life term imprisonment and fined Tk. 10,000 for killing 10-year-old boy.
According to the prosecution, convict Sayeduzzaman, 26, son of Nazrul Islam of Panial Pukur village of Kishoreganj upazila tied a young boy Shohel, 10, son of Ekramul Haque with a tree on 13 March, 2009 on charge of stealing nut from his tree.
The accused mercilessly beat up the boy leaving him seriously injured. The boy was taken to Kisoreganj upazila hospital in a critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries after two days.
Jahanara Begum, mother of the boy filed a murder case with Kishoreganj police station accusing Nazrul Islam and his son Sayeduzzaman.
District and Session Judge Abu Hanif, after examining all witnesses and evidence, pronounced the verdict on Tuesday afternoon.
The court acquitted Nazrul Islam of charges.
