1 killed, 200 hurt in clashes in 4 dists
A man was killed and around 200 others were injured in clashes in Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sherpur and Gaibandha districts on Friday and the day before.
In Habiganj, at least 50 villagers were injured, some of them critically, in clash between two rival groups following a dispute over a game at Gumgumia village in Nabiganj upazila on Friday afternoon.
The seriously injured were rushed to local hospital.
In separate incident, a man was killed and 32 others were injured in fierce clash between rival groups of two villages in Baniachang upazila on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Abul Mia, aged abut 40, of Agua village.
Witnesses said, one group led by Askir Mia of Kewrakandi village and another led by Badir Mia of Agua village locked in a clash in the afternoon for taking possession of a land at Agua Bazaar, killing Abul on the spot and injuring 32, including women and children, on both sides.
In Brahmanbaria, at least 50 people, including four cops, were injured in a clash between the people of two villages over holding a cricket match at Sarail Annada Govt. High School field in Sarail upazila on Friday.
Police said an altercation ensued at about 10:30am between the people of Sayedtula and Tanmonipara villages over holding the match at the field. Later, both the groups equipped with sticks and lethal weapons attacked each other.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired 36 rounds of rubber bullets and lobbed 33 tear gas shells to bring the situation under control during the two and half hours long clash.
In Sherpur, at least 50 people were injured in a fierce clash between two groups of people over holding a badminton match at Sonoibaruapara village in Sadar upazila on Friday.
Local sources said villagers arranged a Badminton match for the children at a field on Wednesday next which was opposed by a section of villagers.
After Juma prayers an altercation ensued between the supporters and opponents of the match. Later, the two groups, one led by Advocate Murad and another by Chinu Mia attacked each other leaving 50 people from both sides injured.
Of the injured, 21 were admitted to Sherpur general hospital.
In Gaibandha, at least 17 people, including women, were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over a trifling matter at Chakshibpur village in Gobindaganj upazila on Friday.
Witnesses said, a microbus was rented for carrying people to go to attend a pre-marriage function at the residence of bride of the village.
The microbus was kept on Rangpur-Bogra highway at 41 Mile area near the house of the bridegroom.
The clash ensued when the microbus was damaged by the villagers of nearby Shamspara-Nundaha village as they thought that the microbus was owned by fraud group leaving 17 people from both sides injured.
Critically injured Azadul Islam, 30, Abdur Razzak, 27, Lal Mia, 35, Sahinur Begum, 22, Parul Begum, 25, of Chakshibpur village and Tara Mia, 55, Rebeka Khatun, 40, Sahera Khatun, 45, and Shariful Islam, 28, of Shamspara-Nundaha village were rushed to Gobindaganj upazila health complex.
