Temple vandalised, set on fire; idols looted

Criminals vandalised and set fire to a temple at Purbo Bejgram village of Tongvanga union under Hatibandha upazila in Lalmonirhat yesterday while a gang looted three touchstone made idols and other valuables from a Kali mandir (temple) in Durgapur upazila of Netrakona district on Wednesday night. A gang set fire to Sanyasi Mandir (temple) at Purbo Bejgram village early yesterday, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent. They also vandalised the idol and threw it into a roadside ditch. "Criminals set fire to Sanyasi Mandir and vandalised the idol at dawn today [Saturday]. A gang is involved in attacking temple in this village. A temple and its Durga idol were vandalised during the last Durga Puja celebration this year but none of the culprits has been arrested," said Dilip Kumar Barmon, president of the temple committee. “We the temple committee members are preparing to file a case regarding the matter with Hatibandha police station. Police can arrest the miscreants if they are sincere,” he said. The acting Officer in Charge of Hatibandha police station SI Razzak said police visited the spot and they are trying to arrest the criminals. Hatibandha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ashraful Islam said the criminals would be brought to justice after arrest. Our Netrakona Correspondent reports: Criminals took away three touchstone made idols worth about Tk 6 lakh from Durgapur Kali Mandir (temple) at Durgapur upazila headquarters in Netrakona district on Wednesday night. The thieves also took away gold and silver made ornaments worth about Tk two lakh and Tk 25 thousand in cash from the temple. Police arrested nine listed criminals in this connection yesterday and today morning. The thieves entered the temple by breaking grill of a window on night when there was nobody in the temple, said police and local Hindu community leaders. Sadan Paul, general secretary of the temple committee, filed a case with Durgapur Police Station in this connection. The arrestees are Arman Mia, Nayan Mia and Babu Mia of Char Mukterpara area, Titu Mia, Zaman Mia of Sadhupara area, Abu Bakar Siddik alias Manik of Teribazar, Rubal, Azizul of Daxminpara and Fazlul Haque of Dhanshira in Durgapur pourasava, "The arrested nine might be involved in the stealing. We are trying our best to recover the idols, ornaments and arrest the gang leader,” said Durgapur Police Station Officer in Charge Kamrul Hossen.
