BNP protesters take to streets, clash with cops

Activists of BNP and its associate bodies yesterday took to the streets across the country to protest what they said eviction of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia from her cantonment residence. They also vandalised scores of vehicles and clashed with law enforcers in different districts, leaving at least 64 people, including five policemen, injured, according to our correspondents. In Sirajganj: At least 40 people, including five cops, were injured in a clash between police and BNP men in the town. Of the injured, 20 were admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital while the rest given first aid. Police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the agitating BNP men and arrested three activists. In Khulna: At least 23 leaders and activists of BNP were injured as police attacked a procession at picture Palace Cinema Hall intersection in the city at around 12:30pm. Four of the injured were admitted to Khulna Sadar hospital. They are Zahid Hossain, Yunus Ali, Azizul Islam and Yasin Babu. Khulna city BNP took out the procession protesting 'eviction' of party chief Khaleda Zia from her cantonment house. In Dinajpur: The angry activists of BNP and its associate bodies took out a procession in the district town. They also blocked Dinajpur-Dhaka highway at Phulbari Bus stand, stranding hundreds of vehicles on both sides of the highway for half an hour from 1:00pm. Police later removed the barricades and restored the road communication. In Chittagong: BNP staged a demonstration in the port city protesting 'eviction' of Khaleda Zia from her Dhaka Cantonment residence. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Monjurul Alam, General Secretary of city BNP Dr Shaddat Hossain, former state minister for civil aviation and tourism Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin and former deputy mayor Dastagir Chowdhury also took part in the demonstration. In Rajshahi: Leaders and activists of BNP and its associate organisations brought out a procession in Rajshahi city protesting what they said eviction of their party chief Khaleda Zia from her Dhaka cantonment residence. They also chanted slogans in favour of today's strike. Central BNP Joint Secretary former city mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu led the procession. In Sylhet: BNP and JCD activists vandalised at least 30 private vehicles at Shahjalal Upashahar, Sobhanighat and Shibganj on Sylhet-Tamabil highway. In Barisal: Three JCD activities were arrested and another was injured as police attacked a BNP protest procession in the city yesterday morning. BNP took out the procession protesting what it said 'eviction' of party Chairperson Khaleda Zia from her Dhaka Cantonment house. Police also picked up JCD city unit activities Liton, Shahin and Md Harun Halder from different spots charge of damaging vehicles during demonstration. In Faridpur: Fadipur district BNP activists vandalised some vehicles on Mujib Sarak in the town in the afternoon. The BNP men also brought out a procession from Janata Bank crossing and paraded different streets. They vandalised two trucks, a jeep and a battery-run auto- rickshaw. In Noakhali: District BNP brought out a procession from party office and paraded the main streets chanting slogans against the government for 'evicting' Khaleda Zia from her cantonment residence. Police arrested four protesters while they were damaging a truck . The arrestees are Abdul Karim Mukta, Md Russel, Jashim and Bahar. Protest rallies and processions were also held in other districts across the country.
