Gunfight, house owners beaten up by gangs in five districts
Robbers looted two houses in guise of policemen in Manikganj yesterday while police arrested two bullet-injured robbers after gunfight in Narsingdi the day before.
Besides, robberies were committed also in Narayanganj, Comilla and Keraniganj early Wednesday.
In Manikganj, robbers looted cash, gold and silver ornaments, mobile sets worth about Tk5 lakh from two houses at Kanda Bashail village under Shivalaya upazila in the guise of policemen early yesterday, reports our correspondent.
The gang went to the house of Monoj Kumer Sarker at around 2:30 am. They tied up the house owner's hands, legs and mouth introducing themselves as policemen.
The gang forced the owner to give almirah's key, took away 8 tolas of gold ornaments, 5 tolas of silver ornaments, two mobile sets and cash Tk15, 000 from the almirah.
The robbers then went to the house of Jahangir Alam at around 3:00 am. They entered the house by breaking open door. They took away 8 tolas of silver ornaments, the house members said.
In Narsingdi, police arrested two bullet-injured robbers after a gunfight with them on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Doghoria Wednesday night.
The arrestees were identified as Mahbub Alam Shipu, 20, and Yesmin, 22, reports our correspondent.
Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Narsingdi sadar model police station, said police challenged a stationary microbus carrying a gang near Mystic Pharmaceuticals at about 9:00pm.
Sensing danger, the robbers started the microbus forcing the law enforcers to open fire. The gang retaliated triggering a gunfight.
Police later stopped the microbus at Sonatola point and arrested two robbers who were hit by bullets during the gun battle.
They also recovered four bullets and three machetes from their possession.
In another incident in Narayanganj, robbers looted cash and valuables worth Tk 5 lakh from a house injuring house owner and his neighbour critically at Khirdasadi village in Araihazar upazila early Wednesday, reports UNB.
House owner Zahirul Islam said a gang of armed robbers wearing masks entered his house by breaking the door open and took the family members hostage at gunpoint at about 4:30am.
Later, they looted Tk 2.5 lakh in cash and valuables including seven tolas of gold ornaments and two mobile sets.
Robbers beat Zahirul and his neighbour Atabur mercilessly as they tried to resist them.
Another agency report from Comilla adds: A gang of robbers stormed into the house of Zafar Ahmed at Dishaband village in Monoharganj upazila and looted valuables worth Tk 2.50 lakh Wednesday night injuring six house members.
Locals said the gang numbering 10/15 entered the house by breaking the door open and made the family members hostage at gunpoint at dead of night.
The robbers at one stage beat and stabbed Momena Khatun, 60, Meer Hossain, 40, Mamtaz Uddin, 35, Ferdous Akter, 30, Zannatul Ferdous Panna, 30, and Taslima Begum, 35, of the family leaving them seriously injured.
In yet another incident, robbers looted cash and valuables worth Tk 8.50 lakh from the house of a businessman at Darigaon village in Keraniganj early Wednesday.
Police and locals said a gang of robbers numbering 15/16 entered the house of Yunus Miah breaking the collapsible gate at about 3:00am.
Later, they took the house members hostage at gunpoint and looted Tk1.60 lakh in cash, 35 tolas of gold, 2 colour TV, 6 mobile phone sets and other valuables.
Hearing the cry of the victims, locals after a hot chase caught two of the robbers and beat them mercilessly. Later, they were handed over to police who admitted them to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
