Rival BCL men clash leaving 10 injured

At least 10 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League were injured as two factions of the student body clashed at a dormitory of Faridpur Medical College early yesterday while office of a contractor was ransacked allegedly by Jubo League men in Natore town on Sunday night. Our Faridpur correspondent quoted campus sources as saying that seven to eight BCL men led by their leaders Mohibullah and Zakirul broke open the doors of room numbers 206, 207 and 112 of the dormitory at around 3:00am. Equipped with iron rods and hockey sticks they swooped on their rival party men and damaged windowpanes. The BCL men belonging to Shantanu and Mohibul faction made a counter attack, leading to a clash between the activists of two BCL groups. At least 10 activists from both sides were injured during the clash that continued for half an hour. Of the injured, Shantanu, Omar Faruk, Mainul Islam Himel, Rabiul Islam, Mohibul Haque, Sunny and Redwan were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital while the rest given first aid. Sources said the clash was a sequel to an altercation between the leaders and activists of the two factions at a meeting held on the campus on Sunday Contacted, ASM Jahangir Chowdhury, principal of the medical college, said a five-member probe committee headed by Dr Nazir Ahmed has been formed. The committee will submit its report within seven days, he added. In Natore, the office of a construction contractor was ransacked allegedly by Jubo League activists at Station Bazar in Natore town on Sunday night, reports our correspondent. Emdadul Haq Hira, owner of H&T International construction, alleged that six to seven Jubo League activists led by Rana attacked his office at around 8:00pm as he had earlier refused to pay them Tk 50,000 as illegal toll. They damaged important documents, furniture, celling fans and a television set during the attack, he said. Hira filed a case with Natore Police Station the same night, accusing Rana and five others. Police arrested Rabiul, 19, Amin, 20, of Bargachha area in the town in connection with the case yesterday morning.
