2 plants of Khulna Power Station out of order

People of 16 districts of Khulna and Barisal Divisions under West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited (WZPDCL) are suffering due to severe power outage as two plants of Khulna Power Station (KPS) have remained inoperative due to technical glitches. A 110 MW power plant of KPS has remained closed since March 31 last year while another 60 MW plant had to be closed down on last October 27 due to leakages in the boilers, said Md Rezaul Karim, executive engineer of Khulna Power Station at Goalpara in Khalishpur of Khulna city. According to the control room of WZPDCL, 435 MW of electricity could be supplied during peak hours on Friday against the total need of 664 MW in 16 districts of Khulna and Barisal divisions. WZPDCL borrowed 230 MW electricity from the national grid on the same day to meet the shortfall, control room sources said. The 34 MW power plant in Bhola has also remained out of operation since long. Efforts are on to reopen the 110 MW and 60 MW power plants for putting them into test operation, engineer Rezaul Karim said. The severe power outage has added to sufferings of Junior School Certificate and Junior Dakhil Certificate examinees, said a high official of Khulna district administration. The situation has also created an adverse impact on export of frozen shrimps as processed shrimps worth several crore taka meant for export are rotting in the freezing plants due to severe power crisis, said frozen shrimp exporter Humayun Kabir.
