Indian clothes worth Tk 13cr seized, 6 held

Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and task force members seized three trucks loaded with smuggled Indian clothes worth about Tk 13 crore in Rajshahi and Satkhira yesterday and the day before. Acting on a tip-off, BDR personnel led by Nayek Subedar Nazrul Islam challenged a truck at Kakonhat in Rajshahi early Saturday, reports our staff correspondent. The trucker and the smuggler, however, managed to flee. BDR members later seized the truck and found 12700 pieces of Indian Saree and t-shirts on it. BDR officials said the seized goods were handed over to Customs Department. In Satkhira, task force members seized two trucks loaded with Indian clothes worth about Tk 8 crore and arrested six people in this connection at Itgachha in the district town on Friday. Acting on a tip-off, members of the task force led by Magistrate Sadekur Rahman halted the two trucks, coming from Bhomra land port in the evening. Later, they took the trucks to nearby 41 Rifles Battalion headquarters as the drivers failed to show any valid documents, reports UNB. After investigation, it was found that the smugglers loaded the Indian clothes in the two trucks at Bhomra port showing false documents. Later, the task-force members arrested six people including the two truck drivers. The arrestees are truck drivers Zahidul Islam, son of Rezaul Islam of Kamannagar in Satkhira town, and Alamgir Hossain, son of Hashem Ali of Kopakhola village in Jessore district, smugglers Shariful Islam, son of Awlad Hossain of Laxmanpur village, Abedin Islam, son of Shawkat Ali of Itagachha in Satkhira town, Mokhlesur Rahman, son of Fazlur Rahman of Choubaria village in Satkhira Sadar upazila and Jabed Ali, son of Mohammad Mominullah of Kamrangir Char in Dhaka.
