Human chains in Satkhira, Gaibandha demand steps to stop stalking
Devashish Saha Rony, prime accused in Chanpa Rani Bhowmik murder case, was yesterday sent to jail
Mominul Hasan, senior judicial magistrate of cognisance court -4 in Faridpur, passed the order on expiry of Rony's two days' remand, reports our correspondent.
Chanpa Rani, 45, an employee of Faridpur Sugar Mill, was killed after Rony drove his motorbike into Chanpa in Modhukhali on October 26 for protesting the harassment of her two daughters Hira and Mukta.
Arun Kumar Bhowmik, Chanpa's brother, filed a murder case with Madhukhali Police Station the following day, accusing Rony.
A special team of Faridpur headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Subrato Kumar Halder arrested Rony in Arabpur old bus stand area in Jhenidah town on October 31.
He was produced in the court that placed him on remand twice. During interrogation, Rony confessed to running his motorbike into Chanpa but denied killing her willingly.
In Satkhira, several hundreds people formed a human chain on Shaheed Minar premises at Shaheed Abdur Razzak Park in the town yesterday demanding punishment to the killers of Mizanur Rashid and Chapa Rani Bhowmik, according to our correspondent.
Satkhira Nagarik Committee in association of Swadesh, a local non- governmental organization, organized the human chain programme for an hour from 10:ooam.
A rally was held at the venue with Satkhira district AL General Secretary and Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Md Nazrul Islam in the chair. It was addressed, among others, by chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the communications ministry Engineer Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Chandra Biswas, Satkhira government College Principal AKM Abdul Wahed, and Sheikh Abu Nasim Moina.
The speakers demanded exemplary punishment to the killers of Mizanur Rashid and Chapa Rani Bhowmik. They also urged the government to take immediate steps to arrest prevalence of stalking.
The protesters demanded that the government enact a stringent law to punish the stalkers.
Our Gaibandha correspondent reported that hundreds of people, including students of different educational institutions yesterday formed human chain along Rangpur-Bogra highway at Palashbari upazila to press their demand for effective steps to stop stalking.
Organised by Palashbari Nagorik Parishad, the participants vowed to resist the stalkers and stressed on creating social awareness about the menace of stalking.
