Serial Blasts in Habiganj town
Trial of two cases Nov 22
Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal has fixed November 22 to start trial proceedings against seven accused, including outlawed JMB chief Maulana Saidur Rahman, in two cases for serial blasts in Habiganj town on August 17 2005.
Judge Mahbub-Ul-Islam fixed the date on Wednesday. He will also record deposition of the prosecution witnesses in three other cases relating to the serial blasts the same day, court sources said.
On October 27 this year The tribunal began trial proceedings against seven accused in the three cases. Of the accused, Maulana Saidur Rahman, his son Shamim and two others were produced in the court. The rest of the accused are still at large.
The tribunal on 14 October framed charges against the seven accused in all five cases for the serial blasts in the district town.
Bomb blasts occurred simultaneously at Habiganj municipality market, in front of Habiganj Judge's Court building and three other places in the town on August 17 in 2005. Five cases were filed with Sadar Police Station the same day.
Police arrested Maulana Saidur Rahman's son AHM Shamim 22 days after the blasts at 'IB computer centre' at Tinkona pukur par in the district town on September 7, 2005.
The law enforcers also seized some books on jihad and CDs from the computer center. Maulana saidur Rahman was arrested in the capital.
Police pressed charges against the seven, including Maulana Saidur Rahman and Shamim, in four cases in 2008 while CID submitted charge sheet against the accused in another case in 2009.
The five other accused are JMB opereatives Azizul Islsam Gazi alias Hanif, Shafiqul Islam Nazim (absconding), Hafej Huzaifa alias Sumon, Belal alias Tamim and Salah uddin alias Salehin.
