Effective steps to stop stalking demanded

Rajshahi University (RU) students yesterday formed a human chain on the campus demanding exemplary punishment to the killers of Mizanur Rashid and Chanpa Rani Bhowmik while police arrested two suspected stalkers of women and girls in Pabna town the same day. According to RU correspondent, the students under the banner of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front joined the programme that continued for an hour from 11:00am. Addressing a rally at the venue in front of the Central Library, the speakers urged the government to formulate a policy and guidelines to arrest the prevalence of stalking. They also requested the law enforcers to remain on high alert regarding stalking and to take effective steps. The speakers stressed the need for creating social awareness against the menace of stalking and urged the people to resist the delinquents. The rally was addressed, among others, by Prof Mahbuba Kaniz Keya, also the general secretary of Mohila Parishad RU unit, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front President Mehedi Hasan and Secretary Pallab. In Pabna, police picked up two suspected stalkers from Pabna Government Girls School area. They are Emamuzzaman, 14, and Md Rony, 15, of Ramchandrapur village in Pabna Sadar upazila, reports our correspondent. Md Mohsin, officer-in-charge of Pabna Sadar Police Station, said the law enforcers arrested the two as they were roaming the area at noon. On Tuesday, police arrested 11 stalkers in front of different educational institutions in the town. The arrestees were later produced in a court that sent them to jail, rejecting their bail prayers.
