Houses, shops gutted in five districts

Fire gutted dwelling houses, jute godowns, cotton mills and shops in Bagerhat, Jamalpur, Chandpur, Madaripur and Comilla districts causing damage to properties worth over Tk one crore on Sunday and Monday. In Bagerhat, six houses and two shops were gutted in a fierce fire in Balur Math area adjacent to Press Club at Mongla Port Sunday evening, reports UNB. Police and witnesses said the fire originated from the kitchen of one Jaleya Begum of the area and soon engulfed five other adjacent houses and two shops. The affected house and shop owners claimed that extent of loss from the fire could go up to Tk 50 lakh. In Jamalpur, 400 maunds of jute in two godowns and four shops were gutted in a fire at Narundi Bazaar in Sadar upazila on Sunday noon. Fire service and local people said the fire originated from the kitchen of a restaurant at the bazaar at about 1pm and soon engulfed the jute godowns and four shops. The affected businessmen claimed that cash and other valuables worth Tk 10 lakh were gutted in the blaze. On Monday noon, a devastating fire gutted goods worth Tk about 10 lakh of a cotton mill at BSCIC industrial area in Comilla. Fire service sources said the fire originated from an electric motor and soon engulfed the whole factory damaging valuables including cotton at Alam Cotton Mill. At least five workers of the factory were injured in the fire. The fire fighters informed that the loss caused by the fire was estimated at about Tk about 10 lakh. In Chandpur, fire gutted nine dwelling houses and eight shops at Newtruck Road in the town on Sunday evening. Locals said the fire originated from kitchen of a slum and spread to nearby shops and houses. On information, fire fighters rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. The victims said the fire burnt their valuables worth tk about 20 lakh. In Madaripur, at least five shops were gutted in a fire at Chhilarchar Bazar under Sadar upazila Monday night, reports our correspondent. Fire Service and locals said the fire took place after generator explosion at a decorator shop and soon engulfed the adjacent shops and a jute godown. Locals estimated the loss of goods at Tk 35 lakh.
