Man to die, another get life for killing for dowry
A man to die while another got life for killing their wives for dowry in Narsingdi and Satkhira.
A tribunal in Narsingdi on Monday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his wife in 2008, reports UNB.
Convict Aynal Haque, 32, of Shaheb Khola village in Raipura upazila, was also fined Tk 1 lakh.
According to prosecution, Aynal used to torture his wife Hlaima Akhter, 23, for Tk 1 lakh dowry.
On the fateful night of March 29, 2008 Aynal asked Halima to bring the amount from her parents which she refused. At this he became furious and set her ablaze pouring kerosene on her body leaving her dead on the spot.
Away in Satkhira, a man was sentenced to life term rigorous imprisonment on Sunday for killing his wife for dowry.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000, in default to suffer one year more rigorous imprisonment, court sources said.
Judge Sharif Uddin Azad of the additional session judge's court pronounced the verdict in presence of the accused.
Convict Manindra Nath Roy, 51, is son of Mohonta Roy of village Dhumghat in Shyamnagar upazila.
The case in brief is that victim Chitra Rani Roy, 45, daughter of Narayan Roy of village Moutala in Kaliganj upazila was married to Manindra about 20 years back.
Manindra used to torture Chitra for dowry as her father failed to pay the amount.
At a stage Chitra went to her father's house at Moutala failing to bear the torture.
But Manindra brought her from her father's house and after that Chitra went missing on November 22 in 2002.
Locals recovered the body of Chitra Rani from a paddy field on December 1.
Later victim's brother Biswajit Roy filed a case with Shyamnagar PS and police submitted charge sheet against the accused.
