Two housewives killed, 2 commit 'suicide'

At least two housewives were killed while two others allegedly committed suicide in the last four days in the district. A dowry hungry man allegedly strangled his wife as Saldah village in Sadar upazila on Saturday. The victim was identified as Rima Khatun. According to police, Rima, 25, daughter of Ila Ali of Kabarbaria village in Mirpur upazila was married to Yairul Islam of Haripur eight years ago. The victim's family alleged that after marriage they gave an amount to Yairul but he was pressing for more. Yairul demanded Tk. 40,000 and asked his wife to bring the money from her father a week ago. As Rima declined to do so Yairul tortured her. On Friday night, Yairul strangled Rima and hung her body from the ceiling to show the incident as a case of suicide. Police sent the body to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy. An unnatural death case has been filed and steps will be taken after the postmortem report, police said. In another incident at Boroitupi village in Sadar upazila, Firoza Begum, 33, wife of Ainal Sheikh died at one stage of merciless beating on Sunday night. In the morning Ainal shouted that his wife committed suicide. People rushed to the spot and found Firoza hanging from the ceiling of a room. Police said Firoza's body bore marks of injured. An unnatural death case was filed with Islamic University police station. Sahida Khatun, 25, wife of Abdul Malek at Kirtinagor village in Sadar upazila in the district allegedly took poison following altercation with her mother-in-law Sunday noon at her house. She was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where she died after sometime. In another incident Sima Khatun, 14, newly married daughter of Sahid Ali of Char Thanapara area allegedly committed suicide at her house. She was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared her dead. The reason behind her 'suicide' could not be known immediately. UNB adds: A housewife was allegedly strangled by her husband at Narasinghapur in Sadar upazila of Narayanganj early Saturday. The deceased was identified as Masuda Akhter, 19, daughter of Abdus Salam Mollah and wife of M Jony of the area. Family sources said Jony married Masuda eight months ago and since then he used to torture her for bringing Tk 5 lakh dowry from her parents. On the fateful night, Jony picked up a quarrel over the issue and at one stage strangled Masuda. Later, he hanged the body from the ceiling of the house to prove that she had committed suicide. The deceased's father filed a case. Jony along with his family members went into hiding.
