One killed, 50 injured as villagers clash
One person was killed and 50 others were injured as two rival groups clashed at village Shibpasha in Ajmiriganj upazila of Habiganj district yesterday morning.
Police in the afternoon arrested 30 people including Ali Haider, who allegedly opened gunshots during the clash.
Police and locals said, farmers Jafru Miah and others took lease of some crop lands in the area while another group had been claiming the land as an Waqf estate for long.
The clash ensued at about 10 am as the farmers went to the spot for cultivating the lands while the rivals with firearms and other locally made weapons appeared at the scene.
Police staying at nearby Shibpasha camp took no action during the 2-hour long clash, locals alleged.
Thirty of the injured were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital where one Motabbir Miah, 40, died after sometime. Besides, bullet-hurt Abdus Shahid, 50, was rushed to the capital city, police said.
Earlier on Sunday traffic movement on Habiganj-Nabiganj road remained suspended for about three hours as locals blocked the road following death of a man in a road accident in Baniachong upazila.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Momin Tarafdar, 35, son of Abdus Sharif Tarafder of Sikandarpur village of same upazila, reports UNB.
Police said the accident occurred at 8:30am when a vehicle locally known as 'Ima' hit Momin as he was standing on a roadside at Aliganj Bazar, leaving him dead on the spot.
Angered at the incident, locals caught the vehicle and set it on fire and also damaged 10/12 other vehicles on the road.
They also caught the driver, Iqbal, and handed him over to police.
Angry locals blocked the road, but the blockade was withdrawn after three hours following intervention of police.
