Farmers of Gobindal village in Singair upazila of the district brought out a procession at the upazila headquarters yesterday protesting government's alleged move to acquire land at the village to develop a satellite town. Hundreds of farmers joined the procession that was brought out from Gobindal bus stand. After parading the main roads, the processionists went to the office of Singair upazila nirbahi officer and submitted a memorandum to him. The villagers said they would send the copy of the memorandum to the agriculture minister, state minister for public works and housing, secretary of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Prime Minister's Office, deputy commissioner of Manikganj, assistant commissioner (land) of Singair upazila, and officer-in-charge of Singair Police Station. It is learnt that the government has taken up a plan to develop a satellite town on 1113 acres of land at Gobindal, Ajimpur, Noyadingi, Laxmipur, Bauntewri, Sahrail and Dakkhin Charigram villages under Singair upazila of Manikganj district. When contacted, Singair Upazila Nirbahi Offficer Nazrul Islam said he did not get any papers in this regard. "The farmers have submitted a memorandum to me and I have sent a copy of it to the deputy commissioner," the UNO said. Deputy Commissioner Munshi Shahabuddin told this correspondent that he did not get any official information regarding land acquisition. Rajuk version Md Nurul Huda, chairman of Rajdhani Unnyan Kartripakha (Rajuk), said local people are instigated and misled by a certain quarter to foil the government plan. The project has not yet reached the stage of land acquisition, he said. "Utmost care will be taken to keep the number of affected people to the lowest possible level and they will be compensated on priority basis," Huda said. The town will be developed in the light of provision of the Detailed Area Plan (DAP), he said.
