Members of district law and order committee yesterday demanded not to harass any innocent Rupganj villager in the cases filed in connection with the recent clashes between law enforcers and villagers. They also expressed concern as many villagers stayed away from homes fearing arrest following separate cases filed by the police, Rab and army. The meeting also blamed intelligence agencies, as they failed to inform the authorities in advance about the tense situation. It also demanded proper investigation into the incident to identify the reasons behind the unrest and people involved in the clashes. Local lawmaker (Narayanganj-1) Golam Dastagir Gazi said many innocent villagers were sued in the cases. “Police administration should announce that no innocent villager would be harassed,” demanded the lawmaker. Rupganj upazila chairman Md Shahjahan Mia said the probe should focus on why people from outside the proposed housing scheme area joined the clashes. It should also detect the suppliers of wood sticks of uniform size and t-shirts among the agitators, he added. Shahjahan urged the district administration to provide financial assistance to the families of the injured. District Commissioner Md Samsur Rahman chaired the meeting held at the conference room of his office. Local representatives, officials of district administration and local Awami League leaders joined the meeting. At least 50 people, including law enforcers, were injured in a string of clashes between villagers and law enforcers in Rupganj on October 23 over “forced purchase of land” by army officers for a housing scheme. A villager died of bullet wounds at a hospital the following day, while three others were reportedly missing till yesterday.
