'Bring killers of Mizan, Chanpa Rani to book'
Rallies, processions, human chains continue in districts
Wave of protest against the killings of college teacher Mizanur Rashid and housewife Chanpa Rani Bhowmik continues in different districts across the country.
The protesters are venting their anger on the stalkers by holding rallies, processions and human chain programmes and demanding exemplary punishment to the killers.
Stalkers killed Mizanur Rashid by ramming him with a motorbike as he had protested stalking of his female students in Bagatipara upazila of Natore district while Chanpa Rani in Modhukhali upazila of Faridpur district met the same fate as she had complained to local authorities against a stalker of her daughters.
In Natore, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Mohila forum yesterday held a press conference at local press club and formed a human in front of the club demanding exemplary punishment to the killers of Mizanur and Chanpa Rani, reports our correspondent.
At the press conference, leaders of the forum announced that they would bring out a procession in the capital tomorrow demanding punishment to the killers.
They urged the government to take immediate actions against the killers of Mizanur and Chanpa Rani and also stressed the need for creating social awareness against the menace of stalking.
After the conference, the forum arranged a human chain programme in front of Natore Press Club for an hour from 11:00am and then submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner demanding exemplary punishment to the killers of Mizanur.
In Barisal, teachers, students, guardians, political and cultural activists and representatives from different professional bodies yesterday joined human chain programmes on the campuses of 38 educational institution in the city and on the outskirts demanding immediate steps to stop eve-teasing and punishment to the killers of Mizanur and Chanpa Rani, according to a correspondent.
Organised by the Committee for Prevention of eve teasing, the programme was observed simultaneously at all the 38 institutions in the morning. Addressing the rallies on the campuses of the educational institutions, speakers demanded enactment of a law against stalking.
They also demanded immediate measures to stop eve teasing and stressed on vigorous campaign against the menace of stalking.
Our Thakurgaon correspondent reported that Thakurgaon NGO Cell, an organisation of local non-governmental bodies, district unit of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote and district unit of Bangladesh Teachers' Association jointly organised a human chain programme in the town yesterday to press their demand for punishment to the killers of Mizanur and Chanpa Rani Bhowmik.
Addressing a rally at the venue at Thakurgaon intersection, the speakers urged the government to try the killers of Mizanur and Chanpa Rani under the Speedy Trail Act.
They urged all to resist the stalkers and build social awareness against the menace of stalking. The rally was addressed, among others, by Sammilita Sangskritik Jote district unit General Secretary Masud Ahamed, Dirrector of CDS, a local NGO, Nurul Islam and Vice-Chairman of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila Parishad Tahmina Molla.
Similar programme was held in Gaibandha town yesterday. Thousands of school and college students took part in a human chain programme at DB Road at noon demanding capital punishment to the killers of Mizanur and Chanpa Rani.
They also vowed to build resistance to the stalkers and urged the government to take necessary steps to stop eve teasing and enact a stringent law to punish the delinquents, says our correspondent
Students of Ahmeduddin Shah Shishu Niketon and college brought out a procession against eve teasing in the town. Around 1,000 students f the institution joined the procession and paraded main streets. Later, they held protest meeting on Gaibandha Shaheed Miner premise that was presided over by Mozharul Mannan, vice-principal of institute.
Our Patuakhali correspondent adds: A human chain was formed in front of the local Press Club yesterday. Teachers, students, guardians and representatives from different professional bodies joined the human chain demanding punishment to the killers of Mizanur and Chanpa Rani.
Coastal NGO Forum, an organisation of local NGOs, organised the programme for an hour from 10:00am. Addressing a rally at the venue, the speakers urged the government to take immediate actions against the killers of Mizan and Chanpa Rani.
