'Long march' concludes
The seven-day 'long march' of National Committee for Protection of Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Port and Power ended with a public meeting in Phulbari of Dinajpur district yesterday.
The citizens' platform, the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports reached Dinajpur in the last leg of its week-long march towards the district.
The march that started from Muktangon in the capital on Oct 24 arrived in Phulbari after covering about 465 kilometres on road. The organisers of the programme also held 60 public meetings on their way.
A large number of people including villagers of Pulbari and indigenous people of different districts gathered at the meeting near Chhoto Jamuna River in the upazila yesterday afternoon. They held banners, placards and wore headbands with slogans against open pit coalmine.
At the meeting, Prof Anu Muhammad read out their seven-point demand including state ownership of all national resources, cancellation of regulations that are against national interest, formulation of laws banning open pit mining and restrictions on export of minerals.
