Mongla Poura Chairman Murder
All three accused acquitted
A court here yesterday acquitted all the three accused in Mongla Pourasava chairman M A Baten murder case.
Judge Md Sekandar Ali of Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the verdict, acquitting Ziaur Rahman Zia, Rakib Munshi and Sheikh Shahid as charges brought against them could not be proved due to lack of evidence.
MA Baten, also the president of BNP Mongla upazila unit, was shot dead at Shalebunia under Mongla upazila of Bagerhat district at 8:00pm on March 18, 2004.
Md Mahe Ali, elder brother of the deceased, filed a case with Mongla Police Station on March 20,naming none as accused.
During investigation, Sub-Inspector of M A Matin arrested the three in connection with the murder and pressed charges against them on November 27, 2005. The court recorded statements of 25 out of 32 prosecution witnesses during the trial.
