Trial of seven JMB men begins
Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal yesterday started trial of seven accused in Habiganj serial blasts case.
The tribunal recorded statements of six witnesses to the serial blasts that took place in the district town on August 17, 2005.
Judge Mahbub-Ul-Islam fixed November 3 for recording statements of rest of the witnesses, Special Public Prosecutor Ashoke Kumar Kar told this correspondent.
Five of the accused, including outlawed JMB chief Maulana Saidur Rahman and his son Shamim, were produced in the court while Salah Uddin and Shafiqul Islam alias Nazim are still at large.
The tribunal on 14 October framed charges against the accused. According to the prosecution, the accused exploded seven bombs in front of the deputy commissioner's office, pourasava market and and five other places of the district town.
Police arrested Shamim at IB computer centre at Tinkona pukur par in the district town on September 7, 2005. They also seized some books on jihad and CDs from the center.
The Criminal Investigation Department submitted the charge sheet against seven people, including Moulana Saidur Rahman and his son Shamim in December 2009.
The other accused are JMB opereatives Azizul Islsam Gazi alias Hanif of Bania in Koira upazila under Khulna district, Shafiqul Islam Nazim of Sherpur in Bogra, Hafez Huzaifa alias Sumon of Kathal Rajbari under Trishal upazila of Mymensingh, Belal alias Tamim of Baniapara in Jaipurhat and Salah uddin.
