Early variety of cauliflower cultivation has become a money-spinner for a large number of farmers in Meherpur district. The vegetable has already reached the market and farmers are making good profit as the sale is good. "I earned a profit of about Tk 25,000 by cultivating the vegetable on one bigha of land," farmer Ashabul Islam said during this correspondent's visit to Govipur in Meherpur Sadar upazila on Tuesday. "The yield is also good this year. The production cost per bigha of land is about Tk 14,000 to 15000, and the produce sells from Tk 40,000 to 50,000," he said. Farmers cultivated early variety of the winter vegetable on around 650 hectares of land in the district and warm and humid climatic condition helped its rapid growth, said Md Moniruzzaman, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Meherpur. The vegetable is also being supplied to other parts of the country including Karwan Bazar, one of the largest wholesale kitchen markets in the capital, he said. Meanwhile, local sources said the cauliflower growers use pesticides frequently to have higher yield.
